Pursuing the Extraordinary Story: Let’s Film Stuff

Writer michael vyskocil
Photographer Eric Forberger
Thirty states, nine countries and thousands of hours of video footage … through the lens of YRK Creative’s videographer and editor Alejandro (Jandy) Zapata’s camera, people connect with extraordinary stories that touch lives and discover stories of extraordinary lives. From international brands to community nonprofits, his work covers documentaries, commercials, narrative films and editorial projects.

Q. How would you describe your cinematography style?

A. I’m a very observational filmmaker. My film background is making documentaries, and I’ve developed a fly-on-the-wall style of shooting that I apply to everything I do from commercial to film.

Q.What’s one of the most interesting video pieces you’ve ever created?

A. A film that always comes to mind is one I did about a professional pet photographer named Jim Dratfield. He had a quirky way of working with animals that was perfect for video.

Q. What are some areas where you’d like to see your video work expand?

A. I’ve always been very passionate about the outdoors and conservation. It is my hope to be able to some day use documentaries to help raise awareness for  land preservation and tell the stories that lie deep in the wilderness.

Q. What’s the best part about working in the York community?

A. My favorite thing about working in York is getting to interact with all the different people who make up the community. I’ve been fortunate to have met so many amazing artists and entrepreneurs who all share the same vision for a greater York.

Q. What’s the one piece of video equipment you couldn’t live without?

A. A lens pen — I can’t imagine anything worse than a dirty lens.
