Tapping Into Community with a Wealth of Support

Service is at the core of hospitality, and it’s also a cornerstone value for Smith, Mayer & Liddle, a York-based wealth advisory group of Janney Montgomery Scott LLC. For Kevin Smith, Executive Vice President – Wealth Management, service also entails supporting the downtown York community. We caught up with Kevin at Liquid Hero Brewery to talk about his appreciation for craft beer, York’s thriving craft beer industry and the city’s downtown dining options.

Q: How would you describe York’s craft beer community?
A:  Prior to 2011, there weren’t many options for craft beer. Now, with the emergence of breweries like Mudhook, Liquid Hero and Collusion Tap Works, combined with taprooms like Holy Hound, you have multiple ways to discover and enjoy good craft beer. It’s put York on the map as a craft beer destination. The creativity going into the beer making is phenomenal, and the quality is top-notch. The brewers themselves are collaborative and go above and beyond to support one another.

Q: What do you think makes York’s dining and entertainment scene so unique?
A: It’s the variety of great restaurants, from casual to upscale dining, combined with diverse attractions such as First Fridays, the Appell Center, and the York Revolution, among others, that increasingly draw people downtown. You have The Blue Moon and its attractive courtyard. Rockfish Public House has exceptional seafood. What brewvino has done with hand-crafted pizzas and a carefully selected beer and wine list is unique. My wife and I recently discovered i-ron-ic, a quaint coffee shop and art gallery. The collective whole of the downtown community has become much greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Q: What are some of your favorite places to meet clients for lunch or dinner?
A: We love The Left Bank and meet there often. The quality of food is excellent, the atmosphere is nice, and the staff is always hospitable. We also enjoy the White Rose Bar & Grill, especially if it’s a nice day and we prefer to have lunch outside.

Q: What makes serving clients in York County significant to you and your team?
A: York County is our home. It’s where we were born and raised, went to school, and now work and live. Whether we’re helping people manage their finances, volunteering for charity, or patronizing local businesses, we’re hoping to meaningfully improve the lives of others and make our community a better place. We believe that our community’s success is quite interrelated with our own. We hope that our collective efforts, no matter how insignificant individually, can have a ripple effect and make a positive impact in a broader sense. As Cary Grant once said, “Destiny is not necessarily what we get out of life, but rather what we give.”
