“There’s nothing half so pleasant as coming home again.”

Poet Margaret Elizabeth Sangster’s words resonate with YRK Magazine Executive Editor and Publisher Breanna Shorten. Bre’s story is one of global experiences and community connections. She spent much of her childhood and young adult life traveling the United States and visiting European countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain and Austria with the members of the multiplatinum rock band LĪVE. But all it took was one magazine to convince her that her hometown had many discoveries awaiting young adults like her.

“While working on tour as LĪVE’s merchandiser, I was given a copy of YRK, and immediately I felt gypped that no one had told me how amazing my hometown was,” she recalls. “I was convinced, like many others who are from York, that I needed to get out of town as soon as I could. I had no idea there was an exciting downtown scene where someone my age could contribute meaningfully and be an entrepreneur.” Fast forward to 2014 when the opportunity arose to do more than simply admire York’s stories from afar. Bringing her passion for philanthropy and journalism back to York, Bre accepted the role of executive editor, fostered relationships with members of the York County community, and collaborated with individuals to bring the stories of entrepreneurs and small businesses in downtown York and York County to YRK.

Today, YRK is more than a publication; it is a top-notch creative marketing agency: YRK Creative. Under Bre’s leadership as CEO and Creative Director, YRK Creative builds brands and produces powerful content for them — impactful stuff worth sharing through digital, design, photography and videography.

“We understand the marketing challenges that businesses deal with. YRK Creative takes some of those marketing responsibilities off the shoulders of those involved in marketing, and our branding services help businesses establish themselves,” she says.

“Big ideas can change communities and our world. I’ve been blessed to call York my home, and I’m blessed to have a talented team of people doing amazing work for our community and beyond.”
