Creating Character in Living Spaces
Homeowners seeking to bring the indoors outside turn to furnishings, textiles and accessories to create living spaces in outdoor landscapes. But what happens when you need to bring part of the outdoors inside your home?
Jeff Inch, owner of Inch’s Landscaping, confronted this challenge when a York-area homeowner wanted to create an expanded, functional mudroom that would serve as an inviting entry for friends and family to her home. The professionals of Inch’s Landscaping shaped a design that did more than simply enclose an existing outdoor patio with a ceiling and walls — it created character and a connection with the outdoors.
Repurposed wood beams from an 1800s-era barn add dimension to the soaring vaulted ceiling accented by a Restoration Hardware chandelier. Custom-designed cabinetry painted in a light-reflecting white offers ample coat and outerwear storage space. The cabinetry features built-in seating and cubby-like areas with hooks to hang jackets and backpacks.
Glen-Gery Brick supplied the material for the floor’s brickwork bearing a whitewashed-inspired appearance. Arranged in a herringbone pattern, the brickwork resembles aged brick and creates a surface that can stand up to a high volume of foot traffic. Inspired by their design and installation work for the mudroom’s interior, the Inch’s Landscaping team created and installed a new covered outdoor patio area and stone walkway that ties into the aesthetic of the mudroom’s design.
Demonstrating versatility in design, Inch and his team believe in the value of creating harmony in living spaces — both indoors and out. “We are a full-service living company. Whether you’re creating spaces inside or outside of a house, we bring the creativity, the vision and the ability for people to use one company to meet all their living needs,” Inch says. “With the creative people we have on our team, we design new ways to create spaces that people love.”
Don’t overlook the ability of well-placed windows and doors to make an indoor space feel more connected to the outdoors.
